How this is calculated

Each puff delivers a fraction of the e-liquid's nicotine. Absorption varies by device — disposables and pod systems deliver roughly 0.10–0.15 mg per puff at 20 mg/mL, while sub-ohm devices at lower concentrations deliver similar amounts due to higher vapour volume.

We use device-specific absorption factors calibrated to published research. Cigarette equivalence is based on 1.5 mg absorbed nicotine per cigarette (the pharmacokinetic average).

How the intake is estimated

One line of arithmetic and one honest admission about the middle of it. Daily nicotine in milligrams is puffs a day × the strength in mg/mL × an absorption factor for the device: 0.006 for a disposable, 0.0055 for a pod system, 0.008 for a refillable. Weekly, monthly and yearly are that figure times 7, 30 and 365.

The three absorption factors are OURS. No manufacturer publishes milligrams absorbed per puff, and there is no figure to publish, because it moves with the coil, the wattage, how long a puff lasts, how deep the inhale goes and how much of the aerosol you actually take in. The three numbers are set so a disposable and a pod come out slightly lower per puff than a refillable, which draws more liquid per activation. Treat the output as a band with the middle marked, not as a reading.

The cigarette comparison divides your daily milligrams by 1.5. That figure is not ours: the systemic dose from smoking one cigarette is 1 to 1.5 mg in Benowitz, Hukkanen and Jacob's review, and this page uses the TOP of that range on purpose. Using the top gives the smaller cigarette count, so the comparison errs toward understating rather than overstating what you are taking in.

None of this is a measurement, and none of it is medical. It is a multiplication with an assumption in the middle that the page has told you about rather than buried.

Why Vapers Often Consume More Nicotine Than Smokers

Cigarettes have a built-in stopping mechanism — they burn out after 8–12 puffs and take 5–7 minutes to smoke. A vape has no such limit. It sits in your pocket, requires no lighting, produces no ash, and can be used in micro-sessions throughout the day. This continuous access leads many vapers to consume more total nicotine than they ever did as smokers.

High-strength disposables and pods (50 mg/mL) were engineered to deliver nicotine as rapidly as a cigarette. Combined with unlimited access, this can create dependence that exceeds what most cigarette brands produce.

The Cigarette Equivalence Problem

Comparing vapes to cigarettes is not straightforward because the delivery mechanisms differ. Cigarettes deliver a sharp nicotine spike via pyrolysis (combustion), while vapes deliver nicotine more gradually through aerosolisation. However, total daily nicotine absorption can be directly compared — and that is what this calculator does.

At 1.5 mg of absorbed nicotine per cigarette (the pharmacokinetic average across brands), a vaper consuming 30 mg/day is getting the nicotine equivalent of 20 cigarettes — a full pack.

How much nicotine is in one puff of a vape?

It depends on the device and e-liquid strength. A typical puff from a 20 mg/mL pod system delivers approximately 0.1–0.15 mg of nicotine. A 50 mg/mL (5%) disposable delivers roughly 0.15–0.25 mg per puff. These figures vary by device power, coil resistance, and puff duration.

How does vaping nicotine compare to cigarettes?

A single cigarette delivers approximately 1–2 mg of absorbed nicotine. Most vapers who take 200–400 puffs per day on a 20 mg/mL device absorb roughly the same total daily nicotine as a pack-a-day smoker. However, vaping delivers nicotine more gradually, which changes the pharmacokinetic profile.

Is 5% nicotine a lot in a vape?

Yes. 5% (50 mg/mL) is among the highest concentrations commercially available and was designed to match the rapid nicotine delivery of combustible cigarettes. One JUUL pod at 5% contains roughly the same total nicotine as 20 cigarettes. Many vapers develop higher nicotine dependence on these concentrations than they had from smoking.

Why do I vape more than I smoked?

Cigarettes have a natural stopping point — they burn out. Vapes do not. The convenience, lack of smell, and absence of a physical end point often leads to higher total nicotine intake. Studies show many ex-smokers who switch to vaping actually increase their daily nicotine consumption.

Does reducing nicotine strength help me quit?

It can, but many vapers compensate by taking more or longer puffs when they reduce concentration. A deliberate step-down plan — reducing strength on a schedule while monitoring puff count — is more effective than reducing strength alone.
