Stoptober 2026 Rules: What the Challenge Asks

By Zigmars Dzerve · Aug 21, 2026 · 9 min read

Quick answer: There is one rule. Stop smoking on 1 October and stay stopped for the month. Stoptober 2026 runs Thursday 1 October to Saturday 31 October. Nobody registers you, nobody checks, and nothing is awarded at the end. The campaign treats nicotine replacement and vaping as ways to get through it rather than as breaches of it.

Most of what gets written about Stoptober's rules is an attempt to make a rulebook out of a campaign that has never published one. The rules are short because the campaign is short: it supplies a date, some free support, and a target. Everything else people argue about — vaping, patches, one cigarette on day eleven, whether the month is 28 days or 31 — has a plain answer, and this page gives all of them.

For the campaign itself, who runs it and what it provides, see our Stoptober guide. For whether it works, see does Stoptober work. This page is the rules.

The Rules of Stoptober, in Full

Stop smoking on 1 October and stay stopped until the month is over. That is the whole ask, and the campaign has never published anything longer. There is no registration, no fee, no scoring, no leaderboard and no way to be removed. Nobody is verifying you, which means the only person the rules answer to is you.

Because there is no rulebook, most disputes about Stoptober are really disputes about what people have added to it. The campaign's own materials answer the three that come up most:

  • Cigarettes are the target. The ask is that you stop smoking. Alcohol, caffeine, sugar and everything else people bolt on are somebody's personal extra, not part of the campaign.
  • Stop-smoking aids are allowed. The government's own support list includes advice on stop smoking aids and on vaping to quit smoking. Using them is the campaign working, not you bending it.
  • Nothing sends you back to day one. There is no mechanism to. The campaign has no record of your month, so it has no way to void it.

Stoptober 2026 Dates and the 28-Day Mark

Stoptober 2026 runs from Thursday 1 October to Saturday 31 October, the same shape it has taken every year since 2012. Counting 1 October as day one, day 28 lands on Wednesday 28 October. October has 31 days and the campaign runs across all of them, but the target it sets is 28, which is why both numbers turn up and both are right.

The gap between 28 and 31 confuses people every year. The plainest way to hold it: the month is the container, 28 days is the mark inside it. Reaching 28 October does not end October, and the three days after it are not an extension anybody imposed on you.

The 28 comes from the campaign's central message. In the government's own words, "people are 5 times more likely to quit for good if they can make it to at least 28 days smoke free". That is the campaign's claim and it is worth reading carefully — it describes what happens to people who reach 28 days, who are by definition the people whose attempt was already going well. It is not a multiplier the campaign applies to you. The NHS's own quit-smoking pages put it more cautiously: once you reach 28 days smoke-free, you are "much more likely to quit for good".

What sits underneath the slogan is plainer and more useful. Relapse risk is highest early and falls as weeks accumulate, so a month is a sensible thing to aim at. The day-by-day guide walks the stretch, and the one-month milestone covers what has changed by the end of it.

What Counts as Breaking Stoptober

A cigarette. That is the only thing the campaign asks you to leave out, so it is the only thing that can be a lapse against it. Cigars, roll-ups and pipe tobacco are smoking by any reading. Nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, inhalers and a vape are not — the campaign lists them among the things that help you get through the month.

Then there is the question nobody's rulebook answers well: what happens if you smoke one on day eleven?

Nothing formal, because there is nothing formal to happen. What matters is what you do next, and here the evidence is clearer than the folklore. People who treat a single cigarette as the end of the attempt tend to go back to smoking; people who treat it as one bad hour tend not to. Our page on what to do after a slip sets out the difference. The ten days before it happened were real, and nothing about the eleventh makes them stop being real.

Does Vaping Break Stoptober?

Not by the campaign's own rules. Stoptober's support materials include advice on vaping to quit smoking, which puts a vape in the same category as a patch: an aid for stopping cigarettes, not a second thing to give up. If your goal in October is to stop smoking, switching to a vape is inside the campaign, not outside it.

That answer flips if your own goal is different. Plenty of people arriving at October want to stop vaping rather than take it up, and for them the campaign is simply not written for the job — its messaging points the other way. October still works as a start date, and the physiology is the same nicotine withdrawal in a different container.

If that is you, read how to quit vaping and quitting vaping cold turkey instead, and use the vaping withdrawal timeline rather than the cigarette one.

Do You Have to Sign Up for Stoptober?

No. There is no register, no fee and nothing you owe anyone. Taking part means stopping smoking on 1 October, not filling in a form. The campaign offers free support you can opt into, and opting into none of it does not disqualify you from anything, because there is nothing to be disqualified from.

The free support the government lists is worth knowing about even so: the NHS Quit Smoking app, online communities, daily emails and SMS, an online Personal Quit Plan, advice on stop smoking aids and on vaping to quit smoking, and free expert support from local stop smoking services.

The last item is the strongest thing on that list. Local stop smoking services combine behavioural support with medication, which is the combination with the best evidence behind it — see quit smoking support groups and counselling and the nicotine replacement therapy guide.

Is Stoptober Smoking or Drinking?

Smoking. Stoptober is England's stop-smoking campaign and alcohol is not part of it at any point. The October campaign about drinking is a separate one called Sober October, run by a different organisation entirely, and Dry January is the other alcohol month. The names are built the same way and two of them share a month, which is why the mix-up happens every year.

We do not cover alcohol. If you meant the drinking one, is Stoptober for smoking or drinking sorts out which is which and points you at the right place.

Does Stoptober Actually Work?

Two published evaluations measured the campaign, and both measured quit attempts rather than lasting quits. Brown and colleagues found October 2012 quit attempts at 9.6% against 6.6% in that year's other months. Kuipers and colleagues, looking at 2012–2017, found a real but modest October effect that was large in some years and small in others, and appeared to track the campaign's budget.

Neither study measured how many of those attempts became people who were still not smoking a year later. So there is no published Stoptober success rate, and any figure quoted as one should be treated with suspicion. The fuller reading of both papers, with the numbers and their confidence intervals, is in does Stoptober work.

How to Actually Get Through the Month

Have something to do when a craving arrives, rather than only something to avoid. An individual craving peaks and passes in a few minutes whether or not you smoke, which is the most useful fact about them, and the month goes better when the plan for those minutes exists before the minutes do.

Three things worth having ready:

The nicotine clearance calculator covers the first days, which are the hardest, and the lung recovery timeline covers the months after October, which is where the point of it actually is.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules of Stoptober?

One rule: stop smoking on 1 October and stay stopped for the month. There is no registration, no fee, no scoring and nothing to be removed from. The campaign treats nicotine replacement and vaping as aids for getting through it rather than as breaches of it, and it asks nothing about alcohol, caffeine or anything else.

When is Stoptober 2026 and when is day 28?

Stoptober 2026 runs from Thursday 1 October to Saturday 31 October. Counting 1 October as day one, day 28 falls on Wednesday 28 October. October has 31 days and the campaign runs across all of them; 28 is the target the campaign sets inside the month, not a shorter version of it.

Does vaping break Stoptober?

Not by the campaign's own rules. Its support materials include advice on vaping to quit smoking, which puts a vape alongside patches and gum as an aid rather than a second thing to give up. If your own goal is to stop vaping rather than to stop smoking, the campaign is not written for that, though October still works as a start date.

Do you have to sign up for Stoptober?

No. There is no register and nothing you owe anyone. Taking part means stopping smoking on 1 October, not filling in a form. The campaign offers free support you can opt into — the NHS Quit Smoking app, a Personal Quit Plan, daily emails and SMS, and referral to local stop smoking services — and using none of it disqualifies you from nothing.

What happens if you smoke one cigarette during Stoptober?

Nothing formal, because there is no register to be removed from. What matters is what happens next. People who treat one cigarette as the end of the attempt tend to go back to smoking; people who treat it as one bad hour tend not to. The days before it were real and stay real.

Is Stoptober 28 days or 31 days?

Both numbers are right about different things. October has 31 days and the campaign runs across all of them. The challenge itself is framed as 28 days, because 28 days smoke-free is the target the campaign sets. Day 28 in 2026 falls on Wednesday 28 October, three days before the month ends.

Is Stoptober about smoking or drinking?

Smoking. Stoptober is England's stop-smoking campaign, run by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities. The October campaign about alcohol is a separate one called Sober October, run by a different organisation, and Dry January is the January one. Alcohol is not part of Stoptober at any point.
